Our Back Story

In 2020, our world was rocked by unforeseen events. Despite years of thriving businesses, one fateful night altered the course of my career forever. A phone call informed me that the hair salon where I worked was engulfed in flames amidst the riots following George Floyd's death, resulting in the destruction of the entire center. Overnight, I lost everything; my equipment was damaged, leaving me reeling after two decades in the industry. Gratefully, I was a partner at a retail store, where the demand for culturally representative clothing surged. This unity in supporting Black-owned businesses became even more evident. However, just four months later, the onset of Covid-19 brought another wave of challenges, forcing the closure of our store and prompting my relocation. Determined to persevere, I transitioned my business online, giving rise to Mechelle Hooper Boutique. Settling in an area with high demand, my business flourished. Reflecting on this tumultuous journey three years later, I am humbled by the unforeseen opportunities that arose. While circumstances may be beyond our control, walking through the doors that Providence opens requires faith. I never imagined this path would lead me here, not only changing lives through the beauty of African attire but also fostering personal growth. Embracing our traditions through vibrant patterns and colors has enriched the experiences of our community immeasurably.
